Purpose

If physicians don’t trust those who lead them, they will become indifferent and uninvolved in organizational efforts. More likely, they will protest and resist efforts to defend their differing agendas. The foundation for positive engagement and partnership with physicians is to build trust, yet most organizations struggle with the “divergence of priorities” and the lack of trust between administration and physicians. This presentation identifies some key drivers of physician trust and engagement, and outlines practical ways to build a collaborative culture and aligned organizational strategies with both employed and independent physicians.


Objectives

Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to:

  • understand the key drivers of physician trust and engagement
  • implement tools to address the lack of trust between administration and physicians
  • develop a shared agenda, notwithstanding the “divergence of priorities”
  • utilize tools and techniques that focus on things that are important to physicians and that drive a collaborative culture and aligned organizational strategies

Jeff Morris, M.D., MBA, FACS

Originally from South Africa, Jeff Morris now lives and practices in Ohio. He completed residencies in South Africa and Israel, and a third residency and fellowship in orthopedic surgery at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. After attaining board certification, he practiced orthopedic and hand surgery in Thunder Bay and Burlington, Ontario, before moving to the U.S. in 1990.

In 2000, Morris graduated with an MBA from Kent State University and was appointed to the position of Regional Vice President of Medical Affairs at two local Northeast Ohio community hospitals.

These hospitals worked with the Studer Group, elevating the culture of service and quality at both hospitals, which resulted in a significant competitive advantage over other facilities in the area. This was accompanied by a significant improvement in physician and employee engagement, as well as a greatly enhanced image in their communities. Morris initiated a hospital wellness program with services to enhance work-life balance and reduce burnout for hospital staff and clinicians.

In his role as the local physician “fire-starter,” Morris witnessed a paradigm shift that moved the patient experience for inpatients to the 85th percentile in two years, and the emergency department twice received the Press Ganey Summit Award for being at or above the 95th percentile for three years in a row.

In 2010, he became a part-time physician coach with the Studer Group, while serving concurrently in the Regional VPMA position and, in 2012, he became a full-time physician coach and national speaker with the Studer Group.

With over 30 years of medical practice, 12 years of physician executive leadership and almost six years’ experience as a Studer Group coach and international speaker, Morris enjoys sharing his passion for servant leadership, service excellence and improving the patient experience. He works with physicians, medical staff leaders, executives and health care workers at all levels to “connect the dots.” As a licensed and instrument-rated pilot, he also recognizes the many “patient safety” lessons — like the use of checklists — from which those in health care can learn.


Continuing Education

Participants must attend the program in its entirety to receive a certificate of attendance and continuing education contact hours.

Registered Nurses — 5.5 nursing contact hours will be provided by MHA Health Institute.

The MHA Health Institute is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Midwest Multistate Division, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

ACHE: Missouri Hospital Association is authorized to award 5.5 hours of pre-approved ACHE Qualified Education credit for this program toward advancement, or recertification, in the American College of Healthcare Executives. Participants in this program who wish to have the continuing education hours applied toward ACHE Qualified Education credit must self-report their participation. To self-report, participants must log into their MyACHE account and select ACHE Qualified Education Credit.

All Other Participants — A certificate of attendance for 5.5 clock hours will be awarded.
